Southern Thai People and Culture
Southern Thailand extends more than one thousand kilometers from Bangkok down to the boundary of Malaysia.
It showcases some of the most fantastic landscapes of the country - add to it the breathtaking beaches and a fascinating view of the underwater world.
“palm oil and rubber plantations grow”
The people and geography of Southern Thailand are a great deal different from the other parts of the country. Instead of rice paddies that are dominant in central Thailand, palm oil and rubber plantations grow in abundance. Southern Thai people closely resemble the religion and culture of the Malays.
The Southern Thai People traces their roots from the Chinese migrants who mixed with the local settlers some 800 years ago. At present, their total population reaches 6 million in approximation.
This group resides in the South area of Bangkok, coming from the Chumphorn province down to the three Malaysia - bordering provinces.
The appearance of the Southern Thai is distinct. Generally, they are short, black haired and with dark eyes.
The tone of their skin is darker as compared to the average Thai. They have their own dialect called "Southern Thai" and it varies in seven tones.
“reserved, gentle and giving”
The personality of the Southern Thais is generally strong. Their persistence predominantly identifies them. However, aside from their persistence they are reserved, gentle and giving.
They are however more aggressive than their Thai cousins from other regions, and they really express what they think. Much similar to the general Thai personality, they do not like being touched on the head, and they expect their visitors to keep their feet on the ground. It is important that visitors in this part of Thailand to stay calm, always smile and show gratitude from the kindness of their hosts.
Southern Thais are inclined to agriculture.
They do most work in the outdoors either as farmers and fisherman. Some work as businessmen and workers in the factory in urban areas.
“belief of spirits in nature”
The religion of the majority of people in Southern Thailand is Theravada Buddhist. It has been existent in the area already for centuries. Buddhist virtues are deeply instilled in Southern Thai culture. A lot of them combine Buddhism with their belief of spirits in nature. A minimal percentage of the people in the area practice the Christian faith.
The distinct culture and personality of the Southern Thai people have often been misunderstood and has even become as a source of conflict between their own fellow countrymen. It takes a deeper sense of understanding of these people to have a harmonious relationship to them.
